In the year of 2013, totally 59 teams from the university attended the China Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling (CUMCM) and the prizes were as follows: 1 First Prize, 3 Second Prizes. Prizes in Shanghai municipal city were as follows: 6 First Prizes, 4 Second Prizes, 35 Third Prizes, totally 49 prizes. 29 teams were under the mentorship of the School of Fundamental Studies and won 1 national First Prize, 2 national Second Prizes; and in Shanghai competing areas we won 4 First Prizes, 2 Second Prizes and 19 Third Prizes, totally 28 prizes.

The year of 2013 has witnessed the best performance in history in the National Post-Graduate Mathematic Contest in Modeling (NPGMCM). One team won the First Prize, ten teams won the Second Prize, 19 teams won the Third Prize and 27 teams won the title of Successful Participant. This year saw a breakthrough because the number of attending teams was the highest in history. So were the prizes. Among the 13 mentors, 8 of them came from the School of Fundamental Studies.

The School of Fundamental Studies has become one of the leading mentoring schools for both CUMCM and NPGMCM in the university.We also achieved a good performance in the National English Contest for College Students (NECCS), winning 2 Grand Prizes, 13 First Prizes, 34 Second Prizes and 67 Third Prizes, and the quality and quantity of the awards are the best in history. The university has won the title of the Best Organizer. According to statistics, from 2006 to 2013, hundreds of students attended the NECCS and 658 were prize-holders: 7 Grand Prizes, 43 First Prizes, 238 Second Prizes and 370 Third Prizes. The university also won the title of the Best Organizer for many a time. Our school played the role of the NECCS organizer in the university. Some experienced and specialized teachers were chosen to mentor the students and they contributed a lot to the achievements.

In the 2013 Mathematical Contest in Modeling/Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling (MCM/ICM) in U.S., all the 3 teams coached by teachers from our school won prizes. Three students from the School of Material Engineering named Huang Xu, Zhou Yi and Wang Lei won the Second Prize (Honorable Mention). The Third Prize winners (Successful Participant) were the students from the School of Automotive Engineering named Yu Wei, Guo Feng and Ran Yong and another three students from the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering named Guo Xin, Li Guangming and Guo Lirong.

Nov. 16, 2013, a student named Lu Xinyao won the Third Prize in the “FLTRP CUP” English Public Speaking Contest (Shanghai). Nov. 2, 2013, a freshman named Liang Junqing from the School of Mechanical Engineering won the Third Prize in the 11th “21st Century ECNU-ACC Cup” China-Australia Friendship English Contest (East China).

The university has also achieved the best results in history in the 15th NECCS: 2 Grand Prizes, 13 First Prizes, 34 Second Prizes and 68 Third Prizes, thus winning the title of Excellent Organizer.
